Oikos Ptochos Theou is the Greek name for the Poor Household of God.
It is a small religious missionary community, whose members, inspired by the life of St. Francis of Assisi, are committed to live a life of prayer, holiness, and service to God’s poor. It believes it is called to experience God’s presence in the suffering, to search for the afflicted and care for them as God’s special children. Observing the evangelical counsels, it intimately combines contemplation with apostolic action.
It began with the decision of four courageous young single women to leave home and family and radically live together as a small lay community, charismatic in orientation, and be at the LORD’S disposal. On May 24, 2000, the four made their consecration before God embracing first the vow of poverty. The next year, they espoused the evangelical counsels renewing yearly their vows.
A few years later, OIKOS embraced the call to care for young women in crisis and very young children suffering from malnutrition, abandonment and deprivation. Through the generosity of Most Rev. Msgr. Leonardo Y. Medroso, then Bishop of the Diocese of Borongan, OIKOS was able to run two homes of refuge in Borongan, Eastern Samar, Philippines.
